What is ITIN?

Everything you need to know about ITIN

What is an ITIN?

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the IRS for people who are not eligible for a Social Security Number (SSN).

An ITIN allows you to file U.S. taxes and may help you access certain financial products and services offered by institutions that accept ITINs.

Important: An ITIN does not provide work authorization or legal immigration status.

What are the benefits of having an ITIN?

Depending on your eligibility and the requirements of each institution, having an ITIN may help you:

Access financial services

  • Start building a U.S. credit history through eligible financial products.

  • Apply for credit cards that accept ITINs.

  • Apply for personal or auto loans.

  • Apply for mortgages with participating lenders.

  • Access certain health insurance options.

  • Apply for rental or lease agreements.

Apply for a driver's license

Some U.S. states allow eligible residents to obtain a driver's license regardless of immigration status. Requirements vary by state, and in some cases an ITIN and tax returns may be accepted as part of the application process.

If you own a business

If you own a business or work independently, an ITIN allows you to meet your U.S. tax obligations.

You may also be able to apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN), which many businesses use for tax reporting and banking purposes.

After filing taxes with your ITIN

Your tax returns may help you:

  • Show proof of income when applying for certain financial products or housing.

  • Provide proof of address in some situations.

  • Support certain immigration processes, when applicable.

  • Qualify for certain tax credits, such as the Child Tax Credit, if you meet IRS eligibility requirements.
